5600 South project improves travel, safety and connections in growing northern Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 17, 2026) — The Utah Department of Transportation has finished a vital project along I-15 and 5600 South (State Route 97) in Weber County.
Construction began in the summer of 2023 and included a complete reconstruction of the I-15 interchange at 5600 South.
The interchange was replaced with a new single-point urban interchange (SPUI), which brings traffic from the I-15 ramps and 5600 South together at one single traffic signal. Its design allows opposing left turns to move simultaneously without crossing paths, helping traffic move more efficiently and improving access between Roy, Riverdale and Hill Air Force Base.
The new interchange serves a busy area of Weber County, with approximately 100,000 vehicles traveling on I-15 and 5600 South in the area each day. The project was designed to address current traffic needs while preparing the transportation system to support continued growth in northern Utah.
“This project transformed a critical interchange that serves people traveling through and around Weber County every day,” UDOT Region One Director Nathan Peterson said. “These improvements will help our roads keep pace with continued growth while also creating better connections for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.”
The project also widened 5600 South between I-15 and 3500 West and added more options for walking and biking along the road, including new sidewalks, bike lanes and a multi-use trail. A new pedestrian bridge carries the D&RGW Rail Trail over 5600 South near Roy Elementary and Roy Junior High schools, giving pedestrians, cyclists and students a separated crossing over the busy road.
The project was built by a joint venture between W.W. Clyde and Granite Construction.
To celebrate the project’s completion, UDOT and the project team will join Roy Elementary’s Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 20. Community members are invited to stop by, view before-and-after displays and enjoy free ice cream.
